On Thursday morning came the devastating breakdown in communication. Her family was told by searchers that she had been found alive, sparking overwhelming relief after days of terror.
Twenty minutes later came utter devastation when officials confirmed that Lily had actually d*ed.
Her parents, Jim and Kirrily Hooper, have since visited their daughter’s b*dy at the coroner’s office after it was finally recovered from the bushland, where a post-mortem will take place to work out how Lily d*ed.
On Friday night, a vigil was held at Oakdale in Sydney’s southwest, not far from the family home, as the community rallied around the grieving family.
A Father’s Surprising Gratitude Amid Unimaginable Pain
In the wake of such a high-profile administrative error, public expectation braced for intense backlash toward law enforcement.
However, speaking to 7NEWS, the father of Lily Hooper said he holds no anger towards police and the SES after the 18-year-old was wrongly reported to have been found alive.
Instead, Jim Hooper told 7NEWS he is grateful to them for never giving up on finding his precious girl during the eight-day search.
For the Hooper family, the incredible dedication shown by volunteers and officers on the ground far outweighed the tragic miscommunication at the command level.
Tributes to a Vibrant Spirit and Community Leader
The tragedy hits even harder when looking back at the vibrant, multi-faceted life Lily lived in her short 18 years. NSW Premier Chris Minns paid tribute to her spirit, reflecting on her love for the environment:
“She was doing what you’d want of every young person and that is getting out in the community, getting out in nature,” Premier Minns said.

She worked part-time as a guide at BridgeClimb, had a huge circle of friends, and held a deep love of martial arts. In a statement, BridgeClimb, the company fostering Lily’s dream of becoming a worldwide tour guide, honored her legacy:
“Lily was an absolute delight from the moment she joined the BridgeClimb family and lit up every space with her smile and enthusiasm,” the statement read.
“She was compassionate, a friend to all, motivated and had a positive impact on everyone she connected with.”
Remembered as a Fierce Athlete and Sweet Friend
Lily was also a dedicated athlete at Bujutsu Martial Arts, where she trained the night before her fatal hike. Mark Szalajko from Bujutsu Martial Arts remembered her exceptional spirit both on and off the mats:
“She was a very talented, tough young lady, only 18 years of age.
She was super tough on the mats, but yet she was still just such a lovely, sweet person,” Szalajko said.
“As she was leaving, she told us she’d be back on Wednesday night to train BJJ and unfortunately that never happened.”
Official Promises and an Unforgivable Loss Forgiven
Facing public scrutiny over the trauma inflicted on the family, Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon promised on Friday that it will never happen again:
“Yesterday’s miscommunication, as tragic as it was, was not born out of ill will,” Lanyon said.
“We want to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
It was a terrible set of circumstances. We will work through that.”
