There is encouraging news from the family of Australian music legend John Farnham.
His sons, Rob and James Farnham, have revealed that their 77-year-old father is doing well as he continues his recovery following his battle with oral cancer.
Speaking on Sunrise as ambassadors for Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day, the brothers said their father remains focused on rehabilitation and is taking his recovery one day at a time.
“He’s still recovering. It’s day-to-day,” Rob said, stressing that rehabilitation takes patience and dedication.
A new reason for John to smile
For the Farnham family, there is also a particularly precious source of happiness at home.
James recently welcomed his first child, a son named Jet, and has been spending more time living with his parents while changing houses.
That has given John the chance to enjoy some special time with his grandson.
James revealed that the pair have already formed “a real special bond”, describing it as something particularly beautiful to watch.
Rob also shared that their father has been enjoying being around his grandson, even running around after him.
After everything the family has been through, those ordinary family moments appear to mean more than ever.
The long road after John’s cancer diagnosis
John Farnham was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2022 and underwent an extensive operation in Melbourne to remove a cancerous tumour.
The surgery lasted around 11½ hours and involved removing the tumour from his mouth, followed by reconstructive surgery.
In August 2023, Farnham announced that he had received the “all clear” following treatment. At the time, he described himself as a grateful and happy man surrounded by his wife Jill, his sons and their family.
But being cancer-free did not mean the difficult journey was over.
The physical effects of the treatment have continued to shape his life, eventually leading Farnham to confirm in May 2026 that he would no longer perform live or sing publicly.
He explained that the surgeries to his mouth and face had made performing on stage no longer possible.
A tribute concert with a deeply personal meaning
Although Farnham has stepped away from performing, his music will soon fill a Melbourne stage once again.
Rob and James are preparing for a major tribute concert celebrating their father, with some of Australia’s biggest performers set to take part, including Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena and Keith Urban.
For Rob, the evening will carry an especially emotional weight.
He plans to perform one of his father’s songs — something he has never done before.
“I’ve never performed one of my dad’s songs before, especially for him, which is pretty special,” Rob said.
He admitted he is hoping he can make it through the performance without becoming too emotional.
John initially didn’t want the tribute
Perhaps surprisingly, the concert was not something John Farnham immediately embraced.
James revealed that his father was initially reluctant to allow the tribute to go ahead.
That changed when the event became connected with head and neck cancer charities, with funds from the concert supporting the cause.
For Farnham, that gave the celebration a deeper purpose.
Rather than simply being a tribute to his career, it became an opportunity to give something back to a cause that has become profoundly personal to him and his family.
John has since expressed his gratitude for the calibre of artists willing to take part, although his exact role on the night remains uncertain.
James said his father is “still making up his mind” about what he might do.

For the third consecutive year, Rob and James are also serving as ambassadors for Daffodil Day, which is marking its 40th anniversary.
The brothers are hoping to help raise $5.5 million nationwide to support cancer research and related initiatives.

The family knows first-hand how profoundly cancer can affect not only the person diagnosed, but everyone around them.
