The stadium lights at Suncorp Stadium captured a familiar scene of frustration over the weekend.
The Brisbane Broncos suffered a diabolical 30-26 defeat at home to the last-placed St George Illawarra Dragons.
Remarkably, this marks the third successive time the Brisbane powerhouse has fallen by that exact scoreline to the Red V at this venue.
The loss marks Brisbane’s fourth consecutive defeat, leaving the defending premiers stranded in 11th position after 13 rounds of play.

History Alone Cannot Save a Slipping Season
Coincidentally, the club’s current five-win, seven-loss record mirrors their exact position at this same point last year.
In 2025, a massive round 14 victory over the Gold Coast sparked an incredible season turnaround that culminated in a premiership win.
However, head coach Michael Maguire warned his squad that expecting another historical fairytale turnaround in 2026 is a complete pipe dream.
“If we’re relying on past history we might find ourselves in a little bit of bother,” Maguire stated frankly after the match. “Everyone can tell a good story of the past, but it’s what you’re doing right now. I can compare stories, but I’ve never seen two years the same.”

One Lone Star Shines Amid Team Lethargy
The Broncos were completely out-enthused by the Dragons from the opening whistle, showing lethargic defensive line speed and predictable attack patterns.
The singular exception to this lackluster display was superstar forward Payne Haas, who returned in spectacular fashion from a six-week injury lay-off.
By halftime, Haas had accumulated more running metres than the rest of the starting forward pack combined.
He finished the day with an incredible 281 metres gained and completed 33 tackles while missing only a single defensive assignment.
Straight Talk in the Post-Match Processing
Despite his own monumental efforts, Haas was clearly furious with the overall attitude and accountability of his teammates.
In a remarkably candid post-match radio interview, the representative forward refused to sugarcoat the club’s current internal issues.
“We are all talk at the moment,” Haas stated to the broadcaster. “We keep on saying we are going to do all these important things on the field, but to be honest we are just bullshitting each other.“
Club captain Adam Reynolds echoed these serious concerns, acknowledging that the team is failing to match the intensity of their opposition.
