Calls grow for a surprise breakfast TV reunion
Former Sunrise hosts Samantha Armytage and David “Kochie” Koch are being tipped by some fans as the pairing that could help reinvigorate Nine’s Today.
The suggestion comes after Today has spent recent months rotating presenters while searching for stability.
Sarah Abo is currently on maternity leave, while Karl Stefanovic left the program following controversy surrounding his interview with British activist Tommy Robinson.
Since then, Nine has tested several combinations, including Samantha Armytage and Michael Willesee Jr., as well as Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort.
Why Kochie is suddenly back in the conversation
Studio 10 executive producer Rob McKnight believes the network should consider reuniting Armytage with her longtime Sunrise co-host.
Writing for the Daily Mail Australia, McKnight argued the former Seven stars already proved they could lead Australia’s breakfast television ratings.
“Sam and Kochie were a winning pair who kept Sunrise at number one, even if their relationship frayed towards the end.”
He added that reuniting them could give Today “the hook it needs.”
The personality factor
McKnight believes Kochie’s biggest strength has always been his ability to generate conversation.
After a listener raised the idea during a 2GB discussion, McKnight argued that audiences are drawn to presenters with strong personalities.
“At least Kochie polarises viewers—a good thing. No one watches bland TV.”
He also suggested that even viewers who disagreed with Kochie often continued watching because he remained memorable.
A role Kochie already left behind
Kochie spent 21 years hosting Sunrise before stepping away in 2023, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family while pursuing other business and media projects.
Nine has not indicated that he is being considered for Today, and there has been no official discussion of any return to breakfast television.
For now, the proposal remains industry speculation rather than a confirmed plan.
Nine’s search continues
The renewed discussion comes as Nine continues experimenting with different hosting combinations in an effort to steady Today following months of on-air changes.
McKnight also claimed Michael Willesee Jr.’s tenure had generated negative headlines, while The Australian‘s Media Diary previously reported that Armytage was involved in discussions over potential co-hosts.
According to that report, Joel Dry was dropped from an appearance at the last minute after Armytage allegedly described him as a “cut-price Karl.” Nine has not publicly commented on that claim.

For years, Samantha Armytage and Kochie were one of Australian breakfast television’s most recognisable duos, helping Sunrise dominate the ratings.
Whether that partnership could ever be recreated on a rival network remains unknown.
