From a cancer diagnosis to a major family relocation, the beloved Sunrise presenter has faced enormous changes in recent years. Yet today, she says she’s exactly where she wants to be.

A Life Transformed Beyond the Sunrise Studio

Much has changed for Edwina away from the cameras.

Together with her husband, Neil Varcoe, the couple purchased a historic 19th-century hotel and café in the New South Wales town of Carcoar, creating an entirely new chapter for their family.

Neil now lives there full-time with the couple’s two children, while Edwina divides her week between Sydney and Carcoar, balancing television with family life.

The arrangement, she says, has brought a sense of balance she never expected.

Finding Joy After a Difficult Health Battle

The past few years have also brought one of the biggest personal challenges of Edwina’s life after she revealed she had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia.

Despite the diagnosis, she has continued working while openly sharing parts of her health journey, inspiring many viewers with her resilience and optimism.

Rather than allowing the illness to define her, Edwina has focused on creating a life that gives equal importance to her career, her health and her family.

Why Sunrise Still Feels Like Home

More than two decades after first joining Sunrise, Edwina says the program still feels like family.

Having worked alongside many of her colleagues for nearly 20 years, she describes the newsroom as a place built on genuine friendships, shared experiences and unwavering support.

Those long-standing relationships, she says, make the early starts and demanding schedule worthwhile.

From Making Coffee to Becoming One of Australia’s Most Trusted Presenters

Edwina’s journey at Sunrise began long before she appeared on viewers’ television screens.

She worked her way through a variety of behind-the-scenes roles—from greeting guests and making coffee to production duties—before eventually becoming one of Australia’s most respected morning news presenters.

Looking back, she says it’s rewarding to watch younger staff now beginning the same journey she once started herself.

Still Open to New Opportunities—But Not Yet

Throughout her television career, Edwina has embraced a wide range of opportunities, including hosting Dancing With The Stars and Australian Spartan alongside some of Australia’s biggest television personalities.

While she says she would never completely rule out another hosting role, she insists she isn’t searching for the next big move.

For now, she feels fulfilled by her current role at Sunrise and the life she has built beyond television.

The Choice That Brought Everything Back Into Balance

Working three days a week on Sunrise and spending the rest of her time with her family in Carcoar has given Edwina something she once struggled to find—a genuine balance between career and home.

After navigating major health challenges, relocating her family and embracing a completely different lifestyle, she says this chapter feels right.

And perhaps that’s the biggest surprise of all: after everything life has thrown at her, it wasn’t a new television role that changed Edwina Bartholomew’s life—it was one quiet decision away from the spotlight that helped her rediscover what mattered most.
