A familiar face, but the numbers remain tough
Nine has spent months searching for a new permanent line-up after Karl Stefanovic’s abrupt departure and Sarah Abo’s maternity leave.
With the regular chairs disrupted, the network turned to a familiar face. Armytage returned alongside Tom Steinfort, bringing years of breakfast television experience from her time on Seven’s Sunrise.
Yet the latest ratings picture remains difficult for Nine.
Over 2026, Sunrise has averaged around 438,000 national viewers, compared with 304,000 for Today. On some days, the gap between the two breakfast programs has stretched beyond 200,000 viewers.
Armytage has now finished her latest temporary run, signing off on September 2 as Nine continues its search for a permanent hosting combination.
The return that sparked a bigger conversation
Armytage’s arrival was never simply another temporary hosting arrangement.
The former Sunrise favourite knows breakfast television better than most, and her chemistry with Steinfort quickly became a talking point.
There were even reports that the pair had caught the attention of Nine executives after their earlier stint together.
But public reaction has been mixed. While some viewers welcomed Armytage back to breakfast television, others made it clear they were not convinced she was the answer to Today’s problems.
That leaves Nine with a difficult decision: is Armytage simply a reliable fill-in, or could she eventually become part of the show’s permanent future?

The timing becomes even more intriguing because Armytage already has another major Nine commitment.
She is the host of The Golden Bachelor Australia, with Nine confirming that the series will return in 2026.
Reports have suggested the show’s return has faced another scheduling delay, with speculation that it could now arrive in March next year.
Publicly, the explanation has centred on programming strategy and giving the reality series the strongest possible launch.
But industry speculation has raised another possibility.
If Armytage were to take on a permanent breakfast role, Nine would have to consider how that commitment fits alongside a prime-time reality series — particularly while establishing a new presenter on one of Australia’s most competitive television stages.
A painful run of setbacks
The uncertainty comes after a frustrating period for Armytage herself.
Her return to Today was briefly interrupted after she fractured her ankle while taking out the rubbish.
Armytage explained that she had simply missed the bottom step and twisted her ankle, tearing ligaments and fracturing bone despite wearing runners rather than heels.
True to form, she managed to joke about the mishap and returned to the Today desk wearing a brace.
But professionally, the questions surrounding her next move have proved harder to laugh away.
What happens to Sam now?
For the moment, Armytage has stepped away from the Today chair, while Sylvia Jeffreys is set to return alongside Steinfort.
Nine has yet to publicly confirm its permanent long-term breakfast line-up.
And that may be the most intriguing part of the story.
