“It was a very boardroom kind of meeting,” Laura tells New Idea, recounting the moment she found out she had won the 2025 season months before the Australian public had any idea.
“Very like quick and confidential with a few important people in the room, and we were just like, ‘This is what we want. We’ve been here slugging it out for so long and like we both loved the experience.'”

“It was just something that we were like, we don’t want to wait three months to know.”

Remarkably, Laura’s experience on the 2025 season means she has never actually experienced the traditional, blind-wait finale format that most MasterChef alumni endure.
Looking back on her journey with the franchise, she revealed to New Idea that she managed to find out the final scores beforehand during both of her previous appearances on the show.
The 2014 Season
Recalling her original run in 2014, when she finished as runner-up to Brent Owens, Laura detailed a surreal administrative meeting on the very day the finale was scheduled to air.
“I remember like flying to Melbourne, sitting in a room with like all the execs at 10, and they read out the actual scores to Brent and me back in the day,” Laura says of her first season.
“And that was a weird experience again, cause it was very much like this setting, sitting around the table, and they were like, ‘We gave you an eight.’ And the judges were there, it was just weird.”
After sitting through that formal scoring debrief in Melbourne, Laura had to immediately fly back home and host a public finale viewing party just hours later, pretending to experience the tension for the very first time alongside her guests.
The 2021 Season
Her second appearance in 2021 presented a completely different scenario due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Because of strict health protocols, travel restrictions, and filming limitations, producers were unable to shoot alternate endings.
As a result, only one real ending was captured on camera, meaning Laura and her fellow contestants knew the official result the exact moment the final dish was judged.
The Challenge Of Keeping The Ultimate Secret
While negotiating early access to the 2025 results gave Laura peace of mind, it also created an incredible awkwardness once the show actually began airing on national television.
Following the conclusion of filming for Back To Win, Laura departed Australia for a pre-booked cooking retreat in Europe, which she extended into a long holiday.
