Tinhlm.AU – After 36 Years of Marriage, Kylie Gillies Forgot Their Anniversary — But Tony’s Romantic Surprise Came With an Unexpected Twist

Kylie Gillies forgot her 36th wedding anniversary — but husband Tony had already made sure the day wouldn’t pass unnoticed. His romantic gesture came with one small and unexpectedly practical twist, leaving Kylie laughing and reflecting on why it perfectly captured their marriage after all these years.

A Milestone That Started With an Admission

After more than three decades together, Kylie Gillies and husband Tony have shared plenty of important moments.

But when their 36th wedding anniversary arrived in May 2025, Kylie made a candid admission that immediately gave the milestone a very different feel.

“Our wedding anniversary was yesterday. I forgot. Tony didn’t,” the The Morning Show presenter shared.

Tony may have been away for work, but he had made sure the occasion wouldn’t pass unnoticed.

Tony Had Already Thought Ahead

Despite being away, Tony organised for a bouquet of tulips to be delivered to Kylie.

It was a simple romantic gesture — and one that became even sweeter considering Kylie herself had forgotten the date.

But there was another detail attached to the flowers, and it soon gave the anniversary surprise a distinctly Gillies-style twist.

The Flowers Came With One Small Catch

When Tony later spoke to Kylie on the phone, he explained that while he was glad she liked the tulips, she shouldn’t become too attached to the vase.

There was a practical reason: it needed to be returned to the florist.

Rather than spoiling the romance, the unexpected detail had the opposite effect.

“It made us laugh,” Kylie revealed.

Kylie Saw Something Bigger In The Moment

For Kylie, the combination of flowers and an inconveniently temporary vase seemed to capture something familiar about a long marriage.

Romance can still exist after decades together, she suggested, but so can all the ordinary and practical responsibilities that come with sharing a life.

Sometimes there are bouquets. Other times, there are bins to take out — or vases that need to make their way back to the florist.

Kylie described that combination as “imperfectly perfect.”

36 Years Side By Side

Kylie and Tony married in 1989 when Kylie was just 22.

The pair had met while working as young journalists in Tamworth and initially focused on building their respective careers before starting a family.

They later welcomed sons Gus in 2002 and Archie two years later.

Years later, Kylie would describe Tony as the person who had travelled through life alongside her rather than one of them leading the other — a partnership she characterised as moving “shoulder to shoulder.”

A Very Kylie And Tony Anniversary

There was nothing extravagant about the detail Kylie ultimately remembered most from their 36th anniversary.

Instead, a bouquet, a forgotten date and a vase that couldn’t stay became a small snapshot of the relationship they have built over nearly four decades.

For Kylie, perhaps that was exactly what made the moment worth sharing: after all those years, romance and everyday reality no longer had to be opposites.

Sometimes, they arrive together — even in the same bunch of flowers.
