Actress Anne Schedeen, best known for her portrayal of matriarch Kate Tanner on the hit 1980s television show ALF, has died. She was 77.
Her family confirmed the news in a statement on her official Facebook page, writing: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share Annie has passed peacefully.

“She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of creative energy, whip smart humour, delight in her family, adoration for little dogs, burning hatred for Trump, passion for second-hand thrifting, and love for a good story.
“We are bereft without her. We loved her so so much, as did all who met her.”
Schedeen leaves behind her husband of 55 years, Christopher Barrett, as well as her daughter Taylor.
Her family described her as a “force”, saying it is “unimaginable” to think about a life without her.
The tribute continued: “But as she said, ‘I’m always with you.’ And she’s right.”
“The memories, artwork, belly laughter, handmade jewellery, oil paintings, sculptures, costumes, and all around joie de vivre live on. Raise a margarita in her honour … we all love you, Annie.”
Her agent, Tom Markley, also confirmed the news. A cause of death was not revealed.
The announcement of Shedeen’s death with great sadness as well as much celebration for her life and career.
“Though I never met Anne, I reached out to let her know how much the fun she brought to her role as Kate Tanner on ALF meant to me and my family during a very sad few years – and she replied with empathy and sweetness,” one wrote.
Another said: “There goes part of our 80s childhood.”

The Oregon-born actress appeared on a 101 episodes on ALF while it aired from 1986 to1990. She is best known for her role as Kate Tanner in the hit sitcom, which follows a witty alien who crashes into a suburban Californian family’s garage and ends up living with them.
She starred opposite Andrea Elson and late actors Max Wright, who died aged 75 in 2019 and Benji Gregory, who died in 2024 at the age of 46.
Before starring in ALF, Schedeen appeared in series such as Paper Dolls, Emergency!, and Simon & Simon.
